Hungary was first settled by the Slavs, but it was then taken over by the Magyar tribes in 896 AD. Christianity was first introduced in the late tenth century. Hungary was taken over by the Austrian Hapsburgs in the sixteenth century. Their rule lasted until the eighteenth century. In 1867, Hungary joined the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was destroyed after WWI and Hungary became an independent country, losing two-thirds of it's former land. Shortly after, it was then taken over by the Soviets. In 1949, it broke free from Soviet rule, and in 1956, it became a neutral country.
Hungary now has a solid education and modern health care. It has a better economy than other former Soviet-ruled countries. It has a parliamentary democracy. Hungarian is the official language, and ninety percent of the population is Magyars (Hungarians). Two-thirds of all Hungarians are Roman Catholic.

Hungary joined the E.U. in 2004. Robert Schuman introduced the idea of a union. In 1951, six countries became the ECSC. In 1957, the ECSC became a common market known as the EEC. In 1967, the EEC became the EC. In 1973, three more countries joined the EC. In 1981, Greece joined the EC. In 1986, Spain and Portugal joined. In 1992, the EC became the E.U. The Euro was launched into the E.U. on January 1, 1999. In 2004, ten more countries joined the E.U. including Hungary. In 2007, Romania and Bulgaria joined making the total member countries 27.

The E.U.'s goal is to cut green house gasses in every member country by 20%. The E.U. is also trying to use more renewable energy instead of fossil fuels. They want to achieve this as one. In southern Europe, glaciers are vanishing, forest fires are increasing, and severe floods are occurring. The E.U. fears that in fifty years, most of Europe will be without water.
Chemical pollution of the air and water is extensive in Hungary and the resources to end pollution are scarce. Hungary is one of the top fifty countries in industrial carbon dioxide emissions. Hungary relies on burning coal for fuel and power. It's emmisions are causing acid rain throughout Europe. Hungary is attempting to cut emmisions by 6% by 2012.

4. How does the E.U. and your country feel about supporting the war in Afghanistan? (political issue)
The E.U. is commited to helping the people of Afghanistan fight in the war. The E.U. is the largest doner to the war. It's main concern is the health and wellfare of the people of Afghanistan. It is costing about one billion euro a year for each member country.
Hungary is making efforts to make a democratic state in Afghanistan. In 2003, the participation of Hungary grew. Hungary took over a resocution team boat.

Hungary has been making efforts to increase growth and decrease inflation. Hungary has attracted foreign investment, although it's taxes are high. In 2010 the taxes will raise even more than they already are to prepare the nation for the Euro. Also Hungary does much of it's buisness with Germany, Austria, and Italy. In the past Hungary has been supported by stronger economies.
